We are explorers, wanderers, travelers, nomads. We strive to project the authenticity of places we visit through honest words and visuals. Enjoy!
As a lover of history and culture, Germany is complex! To understand anything at all about the country, you have to first realize that its modern borders emerged only recently in 1991, following centuries of tribalism, feudalism, nationalism, war and (eventually) diplomacy. The clans and territories of Germany read like a Tolkien novel: Gauls, Goths, Visigoths, Franks, and Merovingians; Thuringia, Saxony, Saarland, and the Rhineland.
This is the land of Charlemagne, the Teutonic Knights, and the Holy Roman Empire, bubonic plague, Martin Luther and the 95 theses that spawned a devastating 30 year war across Europe, Kaiser Wilhelm and Bismarck the Iron Chancellor, and the most revolting genocide the planet has ever witnessed under Hitler. Telling the story of Germany through just a two week visit is tough! But I gave it a go. Hope you enjoy this whirlwind tour through history and the land of my ancestors.
We visited Germany in 2017 after gaining entry into the Berlin Marathon. We were joined by a crew of besties and moms who admirably kept up with a demanding pace. Our circuit tour started in Munich on the first day of Oktoberfest. From there, we traveled by train to Fussen in Bavaria, Salzburg (Austria), then north to Erfurt, Nuremberg and Berlin. From Berlin, we took a train to Cologne, where we rented a car to travel throughout the Rhineland and back to Munich. It was a grand loop!
