Zumaia and Getaria

Within a short driving distance from San Sebastian are small coastal port towns like Zumaia and Getaria, with beautiful beaches and fantastic seafood restaurants. It seems that the Camino de Santiago trail also runs through northern Basque, as we saw signs and church hostels in Zumaia for travelers. A quirky aspect of Basque towns is the escalator. The towns are certainly very hilly and the installation of outdoor escalators increases accessibility and walkability for everyone. In Getaria, they even had an elevator to the top of the hilliest section of town. America has a lot to learn from other countries to help citizens reduce their car dependencies.
